Rokeby Venus Essay -- Essays Papers

Rokeby Venus I choose to look at the painting â€Å"The Toilet of Venus† or more commonly referred to as â€Å"The Rokeby Venus† by Diego Velalazquez. The â€Å"Rokeby† part came into effect, because the painting was originally displayed in the Morritt Collection at Rokeby Hall in Yorkshire, before being moved to its current home in the National Gallery. Diego Velazquez was born in Seville in 1599, and went on to become one of the most brilliant and influential painters ever to come from Spain. He lived in Madrid for most of his adult life, and was employed as a court painter. Throughout his career, he tackled a wide variety of subjects, such as landscapes, scenes from real life, and mythological/religious figures. He was a master realist who excelled at capturing essential features upon the canvas. He painted â€Å"The Rokeby Venus† between 1647 and 1651, and was his only nude portrait, as well as the first one in Spain, at that time. Initially the painting me t with some disapproval, especially from the Church, since it was a nude, but eventually the work received great praise, and became known, as being one of the most beautiful and significant portrayals of Venus in the history of Western Art. The painting, in its simplest form, consists of a naked woman lying elegantly upon stately and rich cloths, while a young, also nude boy, is holding a mirror which contains her reflection. Upon first glance of this work, I was quickly able to make out the identity of the two subjects. ...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Harris Burgerron Essay

Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Dir. Don Siegel. Prod. Walter Wanger. Perf. Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, Larry Gates, King Donovan, Carolyne Jones. Allied Artist Picture Corporation, 1956. Film. , has much egalitarianism meaning as  Vonnegut, Kurt. â€Å"Harris Bergeron†. N. p. : Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, 1961. Print. These two great stories show us how the Cold War era was a time  when people would do anything to prevent themselves from being part of something they don’t want to be, for example, being a communist.During the Cold War Era, propaganda was displayed through the United States. With the message conveying that living under a communist country was a horrible thing. A few failed to recognize the threat, and fell to communism by betraying their country. But for the most part, the minds of Americans where set on stopping communism from spreading, and eventually getting rid of it at all costs. In The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Dr. Hill, pla yed by Kevin McCarthy, took on the role of warning other people what is happening in the town of Santa Mira, California.Resisting to fall asleep at all cost. Eventually getting to his goal of warning other people what horrible things that are to come if they don't take action against the Body Snatchers. In â€Å"Harrison Burgeron†, by Vonnegut Kurt, Harrison Bergeron was a complete failure according to his egalitarist government. Wanting freedom for everyone, he tries to send a message to everyone how the government should really be. He takes off the restraints of musicians, a ballerina, and himself on live television.Showing that freedom to do what what you want, and showing the best you can do at something, is the way to live. While doing so Harrison was killed during his attempt to set and show the example to other people how they should live. He was killed by Diana moon Glamopers, the Handicapper General there were a set of laws, the 211th, 12th, and the 213th Amendments to the Constitution required the people to be the same. But Harrison shows we cannot live this way.

Mean Girls Is A Teenage Film - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1059 Downloads: 8 Date added: 2019/03/19 Category Art Essay Level High school Tags: Film Analysis Essay Did you like this example? Mean Girls is a teenage film directed by Mark Waters which is the best example in sociology through the socialization, social structure, and group in the movie. It also reflects Marxist theory and the Iron Law of Oligarchy. The movie is about Cady Heron who comes from Africa and was home-schooled by her zoologist parents. Moving to another country and attending a public school is totally strange to her; moreover, it struggles with making new friends while she has no experience in a public school. First, Marxist theory is the belief that class differentiation is the critical determinant of social, economic, and political inequality which is one major theme in the film. Marx viewed class struggle as the result of the conflict between the groups such as The Plastics and the other groups in which the higher class having all the power and the lower class being taken advantage of. The Plastics group which is considered a popular group and creating trends for everyone follow includes Regina George, Gretchen Weiners and Karen Smith. They are the most popular in school because they are rich and beautiful. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Mean Girls Is A Teenage Film" essay for you Create order In that group, Regina George is the Queen Bee and the others are followers. As the beginning of the movie, other students describe her as glorious, her hair insurance costs thousand dollars, always wins Queen Spring Fling ( Mean Girls, 8:26-8:46). The other is the lower class who is treated unfairly includes Janis and Damian, Asians and so on. Janis said Regina was a life ruiner and she ruined peoples lives; therefore, Janis wants Cady to join in the Plastics to crack them. Janis is a model of the lower class who wants social change because they were run over and humiliated by the rich people, and now they want to revolt and change their lives. Next, groupthink is a phenomenon especially in The Plastics which describes clearly in the film that members always follow what Regina says and what she says is always true. In the lunchroom, when Gretchen tells Cady their group rules which Cady thinks girls world has a lot of rules (Mean Girls, 13:40) such as wearing jeans only on Friday or ponytail only once a week; moreover, if anyone breaks a rule, they cannot sit with The Plastics anymore and have to sit with the Outcast which indicates Janis and Damian. In Reginas bedroom, the girls look at the mirror and complain about something bad or weird about themselves; the way these girls look at Cady force her to say something bad about herself either. Although Cady enters The Plastics to crack the girls, groupthink took her to believe she was a Plastics. The girls think they are the best in their high school when the fact is not; in addition, they also experience a lot of pressure toward unity because they just want to get along and a part of the group. They always follow what Regina wants so that they dont hurt their friendship. Many times, the other two are silent while Regina makes decisions for the whole because they dont dare to say the right; this creates an confusion of unity. The Plastics can be considered the alpha group in real life, while the omega group is Janis and Damian who are suspected lesbian and gay. The other groups such as Asian Nerds, Freshman, Unfriendly, Rock guys, and so on are in the between alpha and omega; their social status is how they were named as a group such as their race, characteristics, hobbies. Every individual has particular social roles that when are together which enables to be inequality amongst people. In the movie, the majority of students seem to follow The Plastics and want to be popular like them. Regina considers herself as a leader and she has the right to give the other their social status which she wrote in the Burn Book. When Cady wants to join in Mathematics club, Regina stated that would be social suicide in a horrific tone. When everyone is rambling about Regina at the beginning of the movie, which proves that she a high social status at school; while the others are either her victims or highly admire her such as when Ms. Nobury asked if anyone was Reginas victim, everyone raised their hands. That means there are conflicts between the higher status people and the lower ones. In a sociological aspect, the movie about socialization, social interaction, structure and groups. At the beginning of the film, Cady is out-group because she does not belong to any group and cannot have a room in any table in the lunchroom. That is the experience alienation which she feels separation and being isolated from everyone; therefore, she has to have lunch in the restroom. Janis is also an example of alienation. Her story with Regina caused her to become isolated from everyone else and was though as a lesbian. The inequality in the film is only Reginas group have a high social status while everyone else is below them, which lead to the conflict between The Plastics and the others. Last but not least, the Iron Law of Oligarchy applies to Regina and her followers. She rules the other student with an iron fist who was described from flawless to a scum-sucking road whore. In every decision she made were driven by hatred and competition with other girls if it affects her relationship with friends, family or her ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels. Because of being a leader, Regina wants Gretchen and Karen to always follow her rules even they are right or wrong. Gretchen and Karen obsess over Regina with admiration and jealousy; therefore, they always follow her and do whatever she tells them to do. They accept to lower themselves to fit in the group because they dont think they have enough good characteristics as Regina. In short, many perspectives and theories about sociology are found in Mean Girls. This movie really focuses on social interactions, social roles between friends as well as their teachers and parents. The struggle of peer influence and the consistent want to be popular are also illustrated well in this movie. It is interesting how interactions can sculpt a person in a negative or a positive way. Moreover, it is important to understand these perspectives in order to comprehend how the community works in real life.

Population The Growing Problem Essay - 3830 Words

Population: The Growing Problem History of Earths Population From the beginning of time until 1850, the world population had been steadily growing until it finally reached the point of one billion people. Hurray for our species, we are successful and have been able to make adaptations in order to survive! Then, only 80 years later, the world population doubled to a whopping 2 billion citizens. After that, the doubling time was sliced once again. By 1960, just thirty years later, three billion people called Earth home. Seventeen year later, in 1977, the world population hit four billion people. In 1986, nine short years later, we reached a population of 5 billion inhabitants. Between 1841 and 1851, Irelands population fell from 8.2 million to 6.6 million through starvation [and] disease... (Grolier Electronic Dictionary 1996). Also, an even more explicit example of Malthus warnings happened in China between 1850 and 1890 when 50 million to 70 million people died as a result of a successive string of famines. Granted, the Taiping Rebellion added to the carnage, but the bottom line is that people were hungry and did not have adequate food to survive (Scanlon 1997). In 1955, Karl Sax was Professor of botany at Harvard University and published a public warning about the implications of overpopulation in the book Standing Room Only. In this book, Sax warns the human race about the grave danger with which we are faced. When describing the current situation, then a population of 2.4 billion, and the speed at which humans are reproducing, he cautions the reader by predicting that ...at these current rates, the world population could reach 4,000 million by the end of the century (Sax 1955). Self Reflection on Leadership and Management †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Self Reflection on Leadership. Answer: Introduction: The following report is going to manifest self reflection process of leadership material within myself. The manifestation of leadership is set to encompass varieties of leadership concepts and skills. Leadership in order to imply strategic changes in the business organisations needs to be brought into effect by the person who holds the key to drive operations pertaining to different sectors within it. Leadership management according to Kaouther Korbi (2014), is surrounded by an environment that is to be analysed through the skills of perceptions as well as intelligibility. As per Corbis views, leadership is the incorporation of the individual traits that helps a person develop the ability to look deep into each possible trait of the employees (Parkay, Anctil Hass, 2014). The following report thus tends to reflect inbuilt leadership quality as well as learned leadership skills during the procedure of guiding the subordinates in professional business course. The self analysis and reflective paper constitutes leadership theories while managing strategic change in an organisation. Strategic Change Management: Change management is the process or tool that is applied to change the mode of working and performance of the people or the procedure of operations in order to improve the quality of production or service of an organisation. Change management is cordially associated with the strategies implemented by a worthy leader who possesses the skill to develop change management skills of the employees. Self Reflection: I have been working as an operations manager in a company that deals with content development. The company creates contract with the clients belonging to advertisement sectors as well consumer sectors. Different clients belonging to the advertisement department hire the company in order to develop writing contents and making graphical designs on the website. Since the task is completely client oriented, the coordinating staffs are responsible to work according to the requirements of the clients. The requirements are preloaded in the job portal and the work is done accordingly. As a matter of fact, the writers(employees) and the content developers are highly responsible for the project designing required by the clients. It has often been found that there remains a lacuna between the content developers and the clients pertaining to exact requirement files. Being the operations manager, the responsibility is shouldered upon me to form a communicative bridge between the clients and the e mployees. As an organisational leader, it is my obligation that I am supposed to guide the employees of all layers in terms of attaining the the most potential working environment thus attracting greater number of the clients to our company. Establishment of Leadership Theories: I consider myself as a democratic leader and I firmly believe in contingency leadership theories. I do not believe in the great man theory that says a leader is born. While guiding the subordinates in the organisation I make my decisions depending on the present circumstance. Therefore my leadership method does not contain a one way driving. It varies according to the organisational situations. I would like to emulate the quote of Dickens that leadership is not a position, it is rather a fiduciary calling (Dickens, 2015). Who could forget the famous dialogue from Spiderman- with great power, comes great responsibility? In my personal opinion, leadership is not matter of dictating the subordinates in regard to bring best potential out of them. According to Hersey Blanchards Situational Leadership Theory, leadership quality depends on the individual situation. Adaptation of leadership quality depends on how a leader responds to different individual situations in an organisation. This theory somehow links to the contingency theory of Leadership. I can chronicle some of the examples where I realised that I have the zeal to respond to different complex situation while working in this same organisation. Last year, due to huge influx of the trainee candidates in the organisation, the existing workers started fearing that they would lose their job. It gave birth to employment anxiety and resulted in snail- production. Though I was not a human resource manager, I had to hold the steering and drive the entire population inside the organisation to vibrant working culture. The work was quite simple- to give a brief lecture pertaining to the importance of collaborative work. For few days I decided to work with them in the same room. I did so in order to realise their feeling as junior content developer. In most of the cases in found that the employees were not communicated well pertaining to the new opening of a branch of this organisation and they were not supposed to be replaced by the newcomers. On the other hand, there was a huge problem pertaining to the placement of the newly recruited employees as the new branch was nothing but the projection. The next challenge was to settle the newly joined employees under a roof. Since there was no extra space for the fresh employees, I called some of the engineers of my acquaintances and built a temporary wooden building within a month. This was enough to provide space for fifty employees. For next one month the process ran with ease and we could manage both the offices proficiently. Decision Making Theories: I exemplified this incident as it provided me with confidence with decision making. So far I have judged my decision making process, the way of decision making could be placed under the shade of the theory of attribution. Theory of attribution is employed upon the practice of decision making process and it has two different modes of decision making: i) Internal Attributes ii) External Attributes Internal attributes are the characteristics of a person that lead to a firm decision making idea. The internal attributes may be the presence of mind in judging certain circumstances. On the other hand, the external attributes are caused by the behaviour of the situation oriented to the the decision making process. In the aforesaid incident, the internal attribute was the boldness of the decision making process. However, I personally believe that the external attribute was more effective than the internal one. The external attribute was the complexity of the situation pertaining to the shifting of the newly joined employees and construction of the temporary office. Application of Experience: The experience would definitely help me learn better process in leadership band decision making. Though the company belonged to unorganised working sector, the working experience for me has been really helpful as it provided me with ample opportunity to learn leadership quality. Leadership and Strategic Change: Learning of leadership and strategic change helps an individual identify the types of required change in the strategy and management process. It would further assist the individuals to analyse the context of the organisations in designing strategic change programmes (Booth, 2015). Followings are the key elements of strategic change management in an organisations; Fig: Key Elements of Strategic Change Management Source: Created by the Author The elements of strategic change management work as complementary force to each other. In case of bringing the change in the organisation or the operations a leader needs to diagnose the present situation or the problem stated in order to bring the change. The diagnosis is then set to lead and manage the required change. Then it goes on to manage the change programmes in need (Beck, Cowan, 2014). In the previously mentioned case I have applied all the elements in analysing and diagnosing the problem so as to plan the change accordingly. Though the process of diagnosis did not imply any systematic process, it was based on spontaneous understanding of the situation. Then different change materials were incorporated so as to create an idea to revamp the present situation with the conceptualised one. Key Premises of the Change Management: There are four key premises of change management. These are: i) Strategy ii) Context iii) Inertia and Resistance iv) Leadership v) Strategy matters in the identification for the need for bringing the change in a particular direction. vi) Context drives in the right approach to the change depending on the mode of the circumstances. vii) Leadership is the basic need for bringing the change in an organisation (Belias, Koustelios, 2014). Leadership and Nature of Change: Fig: Nature of Change Source: Created by the Author The above diagram illustrates the nature of change adapted by a leader in terms of organisational development. Leadership is one of the most effective forces in brining the change in an organisation (Cameron Green, 2015). Conclusion: Having understood the theories and concept of change management and leadership, i could roughly create a genre of my own thus framing the strategies for change management. As a matter of fact, the change brought in the organisation where i was working, was actually motivated by the situation. My leadership quality was reflected while supposing the change for the new employees. It can thus be concluded that the change management strategies need clear insight of the problem as well as effective planning framework of for the fture improvement. Reference: Beck, D. Rabbits Immobilized In Wooden Stocks With Ulcers In Their Essays

Rabbits immobilized in wooden stocks with ulcers in their eyes; baby seals being clubbed over the head, and the infamous shock treatment. Broach the subject with an individual and odds are that they have witnessed footage of one or all of the aforementioned practices and are appalled by the cruelty. Appalled yes, willing to stand up and voice their thoughts... not often. There is one significant reason for this unwillingness by some to stand up for the rights of our fellow inhabitants of this planet, personal convenience. We are systematically cutting down the last forest that provides their shelter to farm cattle; we dump toxic chemicals and sewage into the waters in which they live; we wear the tusks of the last few of their species on our arms, and we pour cosmetic products into their eyes, rectums or vaginas to determine the harmful effects they might cause on humans, even though the physiological differentiation between humans and the animals they use is durastic. On a daily basis most people do not see their own degree of unintentional support towards this global dilemma, but when compiled on paper one must question how mankind can, with conscience, commit these acts which shame us as human beings. Animals possess the same kinds of feelings and emotions as human beings, and without anesthesia, they are subjected to the pain as well. Mankind often fails to give animals the respect and rights they deserve, they are treated as lifeless, unfeeling scientific specimens and items that we may manipulate at our own convenience and for vanity's sake. Laboratory research involving animals is cruel and merciless treatment of helpless creatures. No law requires that cosmetics and household products be tested on animals. Nevertheless, by six o'clock this evening, hundreds of animals will have had their eyes, skin or gastrointestinal systems unnecessarily burned or destroyed (Sequoia, 27). Two of the most famous animal tests are the Draize, or eye irritancy test and the LD50, Lethal Dose 50. The Draize test is performed almost exclusively on albino rabbits, such as the Florida White, because they are cheap, docile, and are not "equipped" with tear ducts to wash away the chemicals. During the test the rabbits are immobilized in a stock with only their head protruding and a solid or liquid is placed in the lower lid of one eye of the rabbit; substances vary from mascara to aftershave and even oven cleaner. The rabbits eyes are clipped open and observed at intervals of 1, 24, 48, 72 and 168 hours. It is important to note that, during this test, anesthesia is rarely used. Reactions include inflammation, ulceration, rupture of the eyeball, corrosion and bleeding. Some of these studies continue for weeks, and all the while no measures are made to reduce suffering or treat the rabbits. Survival, however, will only lead to an entirely new set of tests, such as the skin irritancy or the LD50. Lethal Dose 50 refers to the lethal dose that is required to kill 50% of all animals in a test group of 40-200. Animals are force fed substances through a stomach tube, forced to inhale a substance, or have the substance applied to their rectum or vagina. These tests continue until half of the test animals die. During these tests animals will often endure excruciating pain, convulsions, loss of motor function, seizures, vomiting, paralysis and bleeding from every open orifice in the body. Any animals who somehow manage to survive these particular tests are subsequently destroyed (Sequoia, 29). There is also a Lethal Dose 100 test that determines the amount of a test substance required to kill 100% of the test animals. Ironically, results of these tests are rarely, if ever, used in situation of actual human poisoning. The skin irritancy test, similar to the eye irritancy test, is where an animal, most commonly a rodent, has a highly concentrated solution of a chemical in question applied to their skin. Their skin is then observed for signs of irritancy, such as redness and blistering. In some cases, the irritation can be so bad that the product actually burns through the skin. Not only are these tests cruel, but the results are unreliable and unnecessary as scientific evidence. As with the aforementioned Draize test; rabbits eyes are not the same as human eyes - there are profound differences, mainly the absence of tear ducts. In addition, different species react differently to various substances; substances that fail to damage a rabbits eyes may be toxic to a human. For example, nicotine is lethal to humans at 0.9mg/kg, but lethal dose value of nicotine in dogs
